For Reflection...

This is a wonderful card to send to special friends who are getting married.

The verse inside is a wedding blessing to wish the new couple joy and peace along the path that they have chosen to share for the rest of their lives.

The image on the card is actually a detail from my watercolor painting called“The Squirrel’s Wedding” that I made years ago.

Many details from the larger painting are omitted in the image featured on the card.

A wedding day is a milestone event in the lives of two people. It marks the beginning of a story for two souls who were, up to this day, living independently from a permanent commitment to each other.

They have now chosen to tie their lives together like two pieces of ribbon to make one single pretty bow.

At their wedding they make a very important promise to each other before other people.

They publicly confess that they will love each other as their special one and only romantic partner for the rest of their lives.

They promise that they will care for each other if they are sick, they will love and encourage the other no matter what happens, whether they are poor or rich, in good times or bad, come what may, they will remain united, their bow will stay securely tied.

Their wedding knot is a sacred bond of love they seal before friends and family that they will never willingly sever; they boldly profess that the only thing that can untie it is death.

The couple place rings on their fingers to symbolize their lifelong dedication of love. They use a ring because it has no beginning and no end; they now share one united, unbroken path.

The Wedding Day is a beautiful beginning of a story of two hearts. Just as my little card shows only a piece of a larger painting, a wedding day is a promise of an expected happy ending.

Only our Creator, however, can see beyond the parameters of that single day in time.

He alone knows the beginning and ending of all things.

As many couples realize, no matter how beautiful or expensive the wedding, no matter how fine the rings, or sincere the promises and vows, the outcome of any marriage depends on each partner’s daily choice to stay faithful to abide in the original promises of their covenant relationship.

Spouses must choose to love and encourage each other above all others, to keep that unseen knot tied no matter what challenges or temptations they are facing.

Each must choose to not wound or hurt the other, no matter what mistake they might make; to forgive and not look for faults, blame or complain; but rather, to be grateful for their spouse; to remain faithful to that first spark of love, even when expectations are not met.

Partners must make the choice to sacrifice their right to have the last word, or to say something negative if it will weaken their sacred knot in any way.
They must commit to putting the other’s needs before their own because that is the only way to keep their unseen knot sturdy, and inviolate.

Spouses must choose to be kind when no one is looking, always remembering that kindness and intimacy strengthens an aging knot, just as murmuring, complaining, and taking it for granted severely weakens it.

If one or both partners are not diligent to do these things to maintain their knot, they risk over time, losing what they did not value.

If the spouses remains faithful to hold on to the truth of their first love and continue to abide in that love and grow in it day by day throughout their lives, they will one day learn that their Wedding Day was but the beginning of a hundred thousand lessons of what true love really is.

At the end they will realize that their knot can never really be severed, not even by death, for they were made “one flesh” when they first bound themselves together by their bold public profession and promise of lifelong commitment.

Though one spouse may pass through the door of Eternity first, a part of their soul lives on in the one who remains.

It is then one understands that there is life that dances beyond the boundaries of our temporal vision.
And that Love goes on forever.
