A Christmas Eve Tradition~ The Merchant’s Trees

Our  Christmas Tree Greeting Card Collection was inspired by our family Christmas Eve tradition of visiting the Christmas trees created by the local merchants in our area.

Every year the merchants association in our town sponsors a Christmas Tree Competition where the local business design and create a Christmas tree that reflects what their business is all about.

All of the trees are always amazing, but without fail, every year the local sewing shop creates one of my favorite trees.

There is no end to their sense of imagination and the ability to delight us all with a tree that consistently captures the wonder of the season artistically with fabrics.

Another tree that brings me joy is the one created by the local children’s Dance Academy. In December their little dancers perform the Nutcracker for the community. Their tree is majestically displayed around their dance theme.  Seemingly hundreds of all kinds of tiny ballerinas hang from their pink, white, and blue sparkling tree.

I wish I had time and space to describe all of the unique trees that the various merchants create in our towns. The time, talent, love, and creativity that these small business people invest on behalf of the community for this competition is heartwarming. Especially when one takes into account that those trees are expensive to create as well as time consuming during most businesses busiest time of the year.

I always come away from looking at the tree exhibition with a warm heart thinking that the people who created all the holiday trees invariably made the sacrifice to create them for us townsfolk did it for no other reason than love.

This thought encourages me because it epitomizes the heart of what Christmas should be.

For the first Christmas began when God sacrificed something He loved very much, His Son Jesus Christ, and gave Him as a Gift to the world, to be born as a human baby who would eventually grow up to suffer and die on a cross, bearing the sins of all humanity to restore peace with God and free us from our sins that we might have eternal life with Him.

The merchant’s Christmas trees remind me of love, self sacrifice, and giving for the joy that their gift will bring to others, not for any good it will do for themselves.

That was like God’s sacrifice.

God’s kind of sacrifice gives out of love and the good it will bring to others, not for selfish gain.

Jesus gave Himself to die on the cross out of His profound love for His Father, He said, “Father, not My will but Thy will.”

He did it for no other reason But that the world may know that I love the Father; and as the Father gave me commandment, even so I do.

John 14:31 KJV

These things have I spoken unto you, that My joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.

This is My commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you.

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Ye are My friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.” John 15:11-14 KJV
