Original Art Print - "Corn Husk Doll Autumn Still Life" Original Painting by Suzanne Davis Harden

I painted this original painting many years ago in acrylics on a little wood decorative plaque that I had bought from a craft & hobby shop.

Every fall I loved collecting miniature pumpkins and gourds and then posing my corn husk dolls beside them so I could paint them. I never tired of painting either my corn husk dolls or the dried corn whose husks were twisted and shaped to create the dolls. As I painted them I inevitable remembered the day, though it was so many years ago, when I was in first grade, when a parent volunteer came to our class and taught us little children how to create dolls out of dried corn husks.

As I grew older the memory of how to make the dolls faded but never did the memory of creating them leave me, nor did the kindness of that parent sharing her knowledge, skill, and talent. Love never dies, the Bible says, nor does its memory fade from our hearts. That parent shared her love of crafting art with us one afternoon and from that one act of kindness she inspired me to create many autumn still lives using corn husk dolls and dried corn.

I think about her selfless act now to volunteer her time and talent to teach us, and about our Lord’s commandment to love one another as He loved us. Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” – John 15:13

When we lay down our life, our dreams, our time, our agendas for others, we are living a life of love, the way Christ loved us. That was the way Christ asked us to love each other. “ This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. “ –John 15:12

As I look at my corn husk doll paintings and drawings that I have done over the years, I will always think of the selfless love that Christ calls us to because of that beautiful act of sharing from the parent volunteer so many years ago.
