Original Art Print~"Show Me Thy Way" © Suzanne Davis Harden

One day I walked into the Ophthalmologist’s shop to have new glasses made and the next thing I knew I had agreed to paint a portrait of someone and her pet mule.

Throughout the process I prayed one of my favorite prayers for I had no idea how to do such a portrait with my health challenges at the time. I clearly felt the Lord wanted me to do it, but I had no confidence that I could meet the demand it would place on my time or strength. I was having daily migraines. These made it nearly impossible to see for any length of time. I prayed, “Lord, how can I paint for anyone when I can’t see without getting a mind splitting headache!” I had nothing to do but pray Psalm 25:4-5

“Shew me thy ways, O Lord; teach me thy paths.
Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day.” ~Psalm 25:4-5

The client was very patient. At one point I completely gave up. I told my husband to tell her I just could not do it. But my Savior has never allowed me to quit on what He’s begun in me. Just like He’s promised in Philippians 1:6: (ERV) “I am sure that the good work God began in you will continue until he completes it…”
The Holy Spirit inspired me to call the client and tell her I would complete the project. The Lord was as good as His word. He gave me the strength to complete the painting.

The Lord even inspired the design of the painting.
It is a visual metaphor of Psalm 25:4-5, the prayer I had prayed.

The woman in the painting is walking down a path, which represents the path of life. She comes to a point where she stops and she seems to have a choice to make. The church on the hill represents her faith. She can move on down that long path and up that steep hill to her goal, though it will be a tough climb, or she can stop and make no more progress because she is tired and weary and she just doesn’t think she can make it to the top.
She is waiting…she must make a choice and she is praying. We all invariably come to such hard places in our path in life.

The mule represents the cross the woman must bear, the work that she must carry up that steep hill.
Mules are traditionally stubborn and the woman must lead him for they are a team. Whatever God has given us to do for Him, He will give us the power to do it.
Philippians 4:13 (ERV) “Christ is the one who gives me the strength I need to do whatever I must do.”

We have a loving, compassionate God. When we have no more strength and feel we can go no farther, He steps in and helps us complete what He has begun in us. He will never give up on us. He will help us get up that hill with whatever task he has assigned us, no matter how steep it is.

I made the original painting (Kerry and Stormy) with acrylic and watercolor paints, colored pencils and soft pastels.

The large 11" x 14" inch print (the image size within the matt is 10" x 7 1/2" inches)
is available in a rich brown colored Matt
